Morning meditation

Getting out of the wrong side of the bed is not just an old idiom; how we feel when we awaken in the morning has an enormous impact on the rest of the day. A good morning routine can make you happier, healthier and more productive, so start your day well with my simple tips.

Be positive

Start your day with a smile if you can. Think of something positive as you awaken and this will affect your mood instantly. If this is something that you struggle with, why not place photos of loved ones, beautiful pictures or inspiring words near your bed? This will ensure that the first thing that you see when you awaken is positive and uplifting.

Be optimistic

People that are actively optimistic are more likely to be happy; by expecting good things, we are more likely to notice them. Notice and take pleasure in the small things that happen every day; your morning coffee tasting delicious, a beautiful sunrise or the morning routine running smoothly.

Be grateful

The first words that you speak each day are highly impactful. Think of something that you are grateful for, and say it out loud to really help you to connect with the feeling. You may find it helpful to write down what you say to create an even deeper connection in a gratitude journal. Practising gratitude is a tried and tested way to boost your wellbeing, and those that do so are proven to have better physical health, less anger, higher self-esteem. They even tend to sleep better!

Be methodical

If possible, try to stick to a simple morning routine that includes making your bed, clearing away dishes and making your home tidy. This simple act of nurturing clears your mind, and makes you feel calm and in control. This is particularly beneficial if you leave your house for the day. You will find that returning home to calm and order is much nicer than chaos!

Please note: 10 & 15 Minute versions of this meditation are included with the MP3 version and are also available within the Relax & Sleep Well app.
Be active

When you observe animals, you will notice that the first thing that they do after sitting or sleeping, is to have a really good stretch! Follow their example and take a moment to stretch out your body. Some gentle tai chi or a sun salutation will loosen up your muscles and release serotonin; the perfect way to start your morning.

Be still

Take a few moments each morning to meditate and be still. Use deep, circular breathing to relax and quieten your mind. Close your eyes, and visualise the day ahead. See it going well with any challenges that arise, expected or otherwise, being dealt with easily and in a calm way.

Once you have stilled your mind with breathing, you can use these morning meditation affirmations to create a positive state to last you all day long.

  • I feel safe and protected
  • I am compassionate and loving
  • I am truly grateful for this new day
  • I love and honour myself
  • I feel a deep sense of peace now
Be kind to yourself

Remember that you are a human being, and if you cannot achieve every one of these suggestions every day, it is not the end of the world! Start with one or two and keep working on them until they become second nature, then you can add to them.

Have a wonderful day!

  1. Thank you for this great advice . Mornings are the best. I have 19 of your meditation apps and love them all. My most recent purchase was Overcome Bereavement. I didn’t know you had one for Grief until recently. It’s been 10 years now since I lost my Dustin, Forever 17, and there are still rough days now and then but it’s been your meditations that have given me back my life! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
